Typical Use in Schools

Food technology and home economics departments in UK secondary schools require a range of cooking equipment, from domestic-style cookers for classroom use to more professional catering equipment in schools with a catering vocational programme.

A typical food technology room will have 8-12 cooking stations, each with a freestanding cooker (gas or electric, depending on the school's utilities). These are domestic or semi-commercial specification and are used daily by student groups throughout the school day.

Schools running BTEC Catering, City & Guilds, or other vocational hospitality programmes typically require more substantial equipment — range cookers, commercial ovens, induction hobs, and associated equipment — to meet the practical assessment requirements of the qualification.

Cookers have a natural replacement cycle as they wear through intensive use. Leasing allows schools to maintain up-to-date equipment without needing to find capital budget for complete department refreshes.

Financial Benefits

Why Lease Cookers Rather Than Buy?

Replacing a full set of food technology cookers can cost £10,000-£25,000. Leasing spreads this cost over 4-5 years.

Leasing ensures your food technology department always has working, well-maintained equipment rather than making do with ageing or failing units.

For vocational catering programmes, leasing allows access to commercial-grade equipment that would be difficult to fund from capital budget.

Equipment can be specified, supplied, and installed as part of the lease — one arrangement covering all aspects.

At end of lease, old equipment is removed and replaced — no need to arrange disposal of heavy appliances.

Operating lease treatment keeps equipment off your balance sheet in line with DfE guidance.

DfE Compliance Note

Fully Compliant Leasing

Cooker and catering equipment leases are structured as operating leases, keeping the assets off your school's balance sheet. This is DfE-preferred for maintained schools. For academy trusts, we structure leases in line with ESFA guidance. Gas appliance installation is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, and all equipment meets relevant safety standards. We include relevant safety certificates as part of the lease documentation.
