To help students personalise their lockers, you’ll need a steady supply of arts-and-crafts materials and a whole lot of imagination.
While some things can (and should) be made by hand, this is a great opportunity to introduce new students to snazzy gadgets like 3D printers, laser cutters and iPads!
Think about the kinds of things your students will make and try to have all the materials at-the-ready in your classroom. Students have powerful imaginations, so don’t be surprised if one asks you for something unexpected!
How students can customise their lockers:
So, you want to help students personalise their lockers? Here are some of our favourite things they can do to make the space their own.
- Photos – This might seem obvious, but it’s a nice idea for students to put up photos of family members, friends and even pets in their locker. This will help them smile first thing in the morning, and perk them up if they’re having a bad day.
- Magnets – If you’ve got metallic lockers, magnets are the way to go. You could help them make photo magnets, funny shapes or something wacky in the DT department. Why not suggest sticking a clock to their locker door to make sure they’re not late for lessons?
- Scented stuff – Bear with us… we all know that lockers – especially sports ones – can get very smelly very quickly. Encourage your students to hang air fresheners or throw some scent balls in to improve this. You’ll thank us later!
- Paper decorations – Your students can cut out intricate shapes, hang decorations or line locker walls with decorative paper to make the space more personal.
- Locker organiser – Help your students make shelves using the laser cutter or 3D printer. This means their dirty trainers can fit in without getting mud on their exercise books – result!
- Keyring – Show your students how to design an original keyring using your iPad or Mac, and print it using a 3D printer. Then let them have a go!
There are plenty of things you can do to help students personalise their lockers. Just be there to support them and help build weird and wacky creations to give their school lockers a personal touch.
