Taking steps to clean your school dishwashers regularly will help keep things hygienic and functioning to perfection.

Here, we’ll give you three awesome reasons why you should be keeping your school dishwashers clean. Then, we’ll give you a handy step-by-step process for making them sparkle!

Why do you need to clean your school dishwashers?

Because they’re cleaning appliances, it’s all too common for people to think dishwashers just clean themselves.

Sadly not. But, here are three reasons to clean your school dishwashers that should bring a smile to your face:

1) Be hygienic

When food builds up in your dishwasher, it brings a whole host of bacterial nasties with it, which could put your students at risk of a tummy bug.

This build-up also stops your dishwasher from cleaning as efficiently, so the things you wash could come out covered in stains, patches or flecks of food.

2) Make efficiency savings

Keeping that dishwasher blockage-free will help it run at maximum efficiency. That means you’re getting the most bang for your buck in terms of the product, and your utilities bill.

Regular cleaning also means less drastic maintenance. Your dishwasher should stay up-and-running for longer, and you won’t be forking out for call-out charges or maintenance work.

3) Reduce hazards

Leaving your dishwasher to its own devices can cause all sorts of problems. However, flooding is one nasty surprise you REALLY want to avoid.

Flooding in a kitchen can easily spread bacteria, putting your students’ health at risk. It can also create a trip hazard (often in tight spaces), or even structural damage if left unchecked.

Avoid these issues by cleaning your school dishwashers regularly, using the right cleaning products.

When to clean your school dishwashers

Give your school dishwasher a little elbow grease once every month. Keep your eyes peeled for any unwanted build-up, blockages or residue, and have those rubber gloves at the ready!

3 simple steps to a clean dishwasher

You can find all sorts of dishwasher cleaners that are heavy on chemicals (and, your school budget). But, this method is cheap, clean and more natural:

  1. Empty your school dishwasher, lift out the bottom rack and have a nose around the drain for any leftover food bits or other nasties. Notice something? Then get on in there with your gloves and bin that blockage. This will help the appliance clean/drain more efficiently and work for longer, as well as reducing the likelihood of flooding.
  2. Then, fill a dishwasher-safe cup or small bowl with white vinegar and put it on the top rack of your school dishwasher. Stick the appliance on a hot water cycle and press ‘go’. The acid in the vinegar will help loosen and eventually remove grease. It should also help get rid of any unwanted odours.
  3. Last, but by no means least, comes the baking soda. Fill a cup with this powder, then sprinkle it liberally across the bottom of the dishwasher. After a short hot water cycle, your school dishwasher will be even fresher. Any final smells should have gone, and all your stains will have vanished!

You could even call on your students to muck in with the cleaning duties to teach them a handy life skill.
