New technologies and teaching methods have altered the traditional perception of the classroom. So what will change? Luckily, we’ve looked into our crystal ball so we can give you a sneak preview of the classroom of the future!

The classroom

Take a look at your classroom. What are the key things that make it a great learning environment? Snazzy displays? Exercise books in easy reach? A tonne of colouring pencils?

While these all seem essential now, the classroom of the future may opt for more hi-tech and helpful alternatives. Take a look:

Goodbye traditional desks and chairs!

Neat desks and chairs will become a thing of the past. In the classroom of the future, it’s likely that seating arrangements will become more flexible so the students are comfortable and can learn more. Here are just some of the ways in which they may change:

  • Standing desks for students who cannot maintain focus while sitting
  • Room for movement (for both teachers and students)
  • Workstations that can be both private and collaborative
  • Moving walls to make spaces more adaptable
  • Outdoor learning spaces for inspiration

It will be more comfortable

A comfortable chair, soft LED Lighting and water on tap will help students create an optimal learning environment. They’ll be relaxed, hydrated and won’t be straining their eyes. What more could you want from the classroom of the future?

No more stained whiteboards

We’ve all made the mistake of accidentally writing on a whiteboard with a permanent marker. Usually we just live with the stain and move on. But in the classroom of the future, you won’t need any type of marker!

Many schools have already embraced electronic whiteboards and interactive screens, but every classroom of the future will have one. All you’ll need is the electronic pen, or just your hands, and you’ll be able to use this new piece of tech.

The teaching

The objects in the classroom aren’t the only things that will change. Your teaching style may need to evolve too. Here are some of the things that may change for you.

You’ll use more technology

Technology will be the go-to option for most teachers. Whether it’s for posting grades and assignments, communication or just marking the register, technology will become your best friend.

It is very likely that your students will be using iPads and other tablets in the future. There are already great ways to incorporate them into your lesson plan, and they’re now easier to distribute than ever!

Virtual and augmented reality will also be integrated into teaching. Students will be able to see 3D representations of historic battles, planets and more! You may even be able to conduct live classes in virtual groups, so your students don’t even have to be in the same room as you.

You’ll adapt assignments to learning styles

For most lessons, all the students complete the same assignment. However, in the classroom of the future, flexible assignments will mean that students can learn in the way that’s best for them. Teachers can still assess understanding and competency, and the kids get to do things they enjoy!

So, how does the classroom of the future compare to your classroom today? It might be time to start making some changes and get ahead of the curve.
